: a The range of growth rates as a function of cell radius for some of the functional groups used in the model framework. The range is the 10–90 percent range for growth rates using monthly data from Station ALOHA. Diatom (N Replete) is the growth rate when nitrogen limitation is alleviated. With added nitrogen Diatoms out compete DDAs because they require less iron. b Non-symbiotic diazotrophs grow slower than non-diazotrophs. Laboratory measured growth rates for Trichodesmium, Crocosphaera, DDAs, and Diatoms. Each group contains at least 5 independent measurements.
