Depletion of isoprene (a) and subsequent production of methylbutenes (b) was only observed in microcosms containing sludge, lactate, and isoprene. In control samples supplemented with only lactate or isoprene, no isoprene depletion or methylbutene formation was detected. Methane (c) production only occurred in cultures supplied with lactate.
