Linear regression trends of representative growth indicators aspartic acid and adenosine, and stress indicators (osmolytes) ectoine and 5-oxo-proline in (a) grass and (b) shrub litter communities. These metabolites were the most relevant from among those that were significantly enriched in either ambient or reduced precipitation treatments (shown in Fig. 3).
