Production of cells (a) and methane (b) for M. voltae cultures. Cells were grown with synthetic mackinawite (FeS) added to a final concentration of 2 mM Fe with or without added 1 mM added HS. Cells provided with Fe(II) and HS served as the positive control. CH4, methane; Fe(II), ferrous iron; HS, sulfide; FeS, mackinawite.
