  1. For age we depict the mean values and the belonging standard deviations in brackets. The Pearson’s χ2 tests were used for binary data and performed with Yate’s continuity correction. The z-test was used for the SES variable and was conducted as asymptotic linear-by-linear association test, to account for the ordering in the data. The t tests were used for continuous data and were conducted as Welsh’s two-sample t tests. Tests were conducted two-sided. SES was calculated based on the ACORN classification system (http://www.caci.co.uk)61. Prior psychiatric history was measured with the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children (Present and Lifetime Version)62 and included learning disabilities, clinical sub-threshold diagnoses and deliberate self-harm at age 14; and clinical sub-threshold diagnoses and deliberate self-harm, but not learning disabilities, at age 17.
  2. aPlease note, the descriptive statistics are not based on the imputed data, which is why some participants have missing data on some descriptive variables, and accordingly some numbers do not add up.
