The new periodontist addresses the patient after a sharp intake of breath: 'Do you know you have gum disease?'

I wondered if I had avoided using the term 'gum disease', previously; and instead had only referred to it as 'periodontal disease' or 'gum problems'. Or had she encountered so many other problems after stabilising her periodontal health that it was just a distant memory? Should I now ensure I gasp with dramatic effect when examining patients to effectively convey the urgency of my message?
