Life teaches us that surprises are sometimes unpleasant. Indeed, when the unexpected happens in clinical practice it is important to ask, could this have been anticipated or in legal terms, foreseen?

Our professional training gives us the necessary skills to assess a clinical situation ahead of time, to anticipate what may happen and so reduce any element of 'surprise'. In so doing we are engaging in risk management.
