There is much misconception amongst policy makers and the public around the reasons that dentists chose to move away from the NHS. We understand there is a variety of factors driving this, such as issues around the NHS contract and workforce challenges, but the situation varies from dentist to dentist. Very rarely addressed is the challenge this move can have for dentists, both emotionally and financially.

The NHS is a much-loved institution and, in my experience, both personally, when I was a practice owner, choosing not to sign the 2006 contract, and professionally within my current role, talking to many who have gone down this route; making the decision to leave the NHS is overall an emotional experience.
