It's difficult to equate the rock-star status of Dickens (both then and since) with the fact that he wrote this short book primarily to make some money at a time when it was in short supply. Dickens was in his late 20s, coming from a poor family, and like so many of his peers had been doing menial work since age 12 to support his family and to cover for his own dad's enforced absence in a debtor's prison.
