Medicines management is a fundamental aspect of dental practice, ensuring patient safety and compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) standards. Proper storage, handling, prescribing, and disposal of medicines are essential for meeting regulatory requirements and maintaining high standards of care.
All medicines must be stored securely in lockable treatment rooms or stock areas, away from public access, and in accordance with packaging instructions to maintain effectiveness. For example, any medication that requires refrigeration must be kept in a dedicated unit, maintained between 2°C and 8°C. Each temperature check must be recorded along with the name of the team member who carried out the measurement. Meticulous records help identify and resolve issues promptly while maintaining transparency. Access to storage areas should be strictly limited to authorised team members to prevent unauthorised use and minimise handling errors.
