When engaging in disciplinary proceedings, the role of the Trade Union Representative (TUR) is multifaceted. They are responsible for offering advice and representing the employee throughout the entire process, including accompanying them to the disciplinary hearing. Employees have a statutory right to be accompanied by a TUR during such hearings, and they often exercise this right when formally invited.

It is essential to understand the legal rights of employees in these situations. Under Section 10 of the Employment Relations Act 1999, employees are entitled to be accompanied at disciplinary hearings by a companion of their choosing. This includes Trade Union representatives - regardless of whether the employee is a union member or whether the trade union is formally recognised by your dental practice.
