One of the most difficult skills to develop as an undergraduate dental student is assessing the restorability of teeth. Sometimes it is obvious when a tooth is unrestorable, vertical root fractures and deep subgingival caries, to name a couple. But how many of us can confidently decide whether or not to restore any tooth presented to us? The dental practicality index (DPI) gives a standardised framework for assessing whether a tooth should be treated or extracted.
