What is Special Care Dentistry, I hear you ask? It was on my first clinical day of DCT that my consultant asked me this exact question, to which I managed to string a few words together to describe what I thought it was. After having worked as a foundation dentist for a year and a further year of being an associate across two practices, I knew I could refer patients to community dental services or SCD. However, I did not truly appreciate their subtleties and differences. I was even asked by several colleagues why I took the SCD DCT job and what was I really going to gain from it apart from having lots of time to drink tea? In fact, it has been quite the opposite.
My husband is a Maxillofacial Surgery DCT in Liverpool, so we often spend our time discussing our interesting cases and comparing who had a more tiresome day. Whilst he often tells me about the lacerations and dog bites he sees, I often entertain him with my patient stories.
