Networking is an important aspect of dentistry that may sometimes (unknowingly) be overlooked by students. It provides connections to people and professionals that may have many benefits including career progression, job opportunities and even long-term mentorship.
My personal experience of networking has been quite limited and I've only exchanged words and got to know some dentists I've met during my time working at a small bakery. They give me a few, general words of advice and encouragement: ‘it's worth it', ‘keep going' but the conversation seems to end at that. That being said, I feel that I am yet to actively make connections in the industry, unlike some of my already well-versed peers. It is something that perhaps hadn't occurred to me seriously. However, in the last few months and starting the third year of my degree, I am beginning to see patients on a regular basis, and I am seeing how my work directly affects people.
