For those approaching their final year of studies, the prospect of becoming a qualified dentist becomes more tangible, and for many, progressing into Dental Foundation Training (DFT) feels like the logical next step. Academic Dental Foundation Training offers a fantastic combination of both clinical and academic dentistry, giving a solid foundation to kickstart your career. I am currently just over halfway through my Academic Dental Foundation Training Year in Northern Ireland, and have thoroughly enjoyed the last few months. I spend four days a week at my foundation training practice, and one in the Centre for Public Health at Queen's University Belfast. My post is a one-year position, and through my joint-appointment, I've gained a deeper appreciation for the balance between clinical and academic dentistry.
Evidence-based dentistry informs and shapes clinical practice, and this training post offers a unique opportunity to contribute to and expand the field of dentistry's body of knowledge, while collaborating with experts in their fields. Being part of a continually evolving discipline is rewarding, and participating in research not only deepens your understanding, but also supports your professional development. Through this post you will also have access to many resources including libraries, training sessions, databases, mentorship and technology to aid your research, and protected time is allocated for academic work alongside clinical duties, ensuring a balanced experience.
