It is commonly taught that Maxillary Midline Diastemas (MMD) should be reduced to 1 mm or less, or eliminated completely, in order to achieve an attractive smile. Much of the research around the attractiveness of smiles was carried out amongst Caucasian populations. Beauty standards are evolving based on a more worldwide viewpoint, including positive portrayals of people with Maxillary Midline Diastemas amongst fashion models and other societal measures of physical attractiveness.
