By Jason Stokes, Chair of the British Dental Association (BDA) Students Committee

I have been honoured to take on the role of Chair of the British Dental Association (BDA) Students Committee. I am following in the footsteps of Paul Blaylock, and I must thank him for his hard work and excellent leadership. The Committee represents dental undergraduates from all 16 dental schools across the UK. It is the collective voice of dental students, advocating for their interests to dental schools, the Dental Schools Council, COPDEND, and other key stakeholders who shape our profession's future.
Our Committee exists to ensure that student perspectives are not only heard but acted upon. Through regular meetings and national engagement, we identify the challenges facing dental students and work collaboratively to influence policy and drive positive change. The BDA Student Manifesto 2023–2025 set out our key priorities: improving clinical experience, supporting wellbeing, promoting equality and inclusion, addressing student finance, ensuring access to Dental Foundation Training, and strengthening the student voice.
This Committee provides invaluable experience for those who want to shape the future of dentistry and gain skills and networks that will last a lifetime. Membership and engagement with the BDA are crucial for undergraduates.
As Chair, my focus is on building stronger connections between students and the BDA, ensuring that every dental school feels heard and represented. I am passionate about creating opportunities for students to contribute meaningfully to the development of our profession. This will be through policy discussions, research and leadership initiatives such as the BDA Future Leaders Programme. This Committee provides invaluable experience for those who want to shape the future of dentistry and gain skills and networks that will last a lifetime.
Membership and engagement with the BDA are crucial for undergraduates. The BDA is the professional body that will continue to support students long after graduation. The BDA is there to stand up for fair pay, good working conditions, and professional opportunities. By joining and supporting the BDA, students help strengthen the collective voice that protects and advances our profession.
Together, we can ensure that the concerns of today's dental students are recognised by dental leaders. I encourage every dental student to get involved, share your views, and support the ongoing work of the BDA Students Committee, because together we are stronger.
