  1. (A) Enpen and TriCurin-Enpen were stored in the dark at 4 °C for 3.5 months. HeLa cells were exposed to increasing concentrations of Enpen or TriCurin-Enpen for 96 h and the number of viable cells was determined by the MTT assay, as described in the “Methods” section.
  2. *Two-tailed T test.
  3. (B,C) Organotypic human vaginal-ectocervical (VEC) tissue (EpiVaginal, MaTtek, MA) was used to test the toxicity of:
  4. (B) Enpen compared to two positive control creams known to be toxic: Gynol II, 1% Triton X-100, as described in the “Methods” section.
  5. *T-s: T statistics; **P-v: p value.
  6. (C) TrCurin-Enpen and Enpen cream compared to two positive control creams known to be toxic Vagisil (benzocaine 5%, resorcinol 2%) and Gynol II (nonoxynol-9 (3%), as described in the “Methods” section.
