  1. p values were calculated using a one-tailed z-test and indicate the likelihood that the observed number of surviving cells is not greater than observed in N2 [56]. These calculations are based on the observation that Ced animals have an average of 11.4 extra cells in the anterior pharynx [8]. Sample sizes were chosen to allow detection of a significant increase in the number of surviving cells at a frequency of ≥2%. Each CRISPR-edited strain was outcrossed once to N2 prior to scoring.
