a miR-15/16 expression is deregulated in hematological malignancies and induces cell death by inhibiting the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein BCL-2 and BMI1. b miR-34a acts as a tumor suppressor gene by directly repressing the expression of several proteins involved in the regulation of cell survival. c miR-29a regulates the critical anti-apoptotic genes MCL-1. MCL-1 is an anti-apoptotic protein that promotes cancer cell survival and proliferation, and it is frequently overexpressed in AML. It has been also shown that miR-29 can induce cell death by inducing the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins, including BIM and PDCD4. BCL-2 B-cell lymphoma 2 gene, BMI1 polycomb complex protein BMI1, MCL-1 induced myeloid leukemia cell differentiation protein, BIM BCL-2-like protein 11, PDCD4 programmed cell death protein 4, AML acute myeloid leukemia.
