In human melanocytes, α-MSH binds MC1R and activates MC1R signaling, thus the expression of MC1R downstream factor MITF is stimulated. As a result, the enhanced interaction between MITF and CENP-A protects chromosome stability and reduces the risk of tumor initiation.
