Macrophages in liver metastasis. Distinct populations of macrophages are depicted: MoMϕσ, recently derived from recruited monocytes, express early inflammatory markers (SERPINB2, S100A8), are morphologically small (S-TAMs), and are localized in the peritumoral region. TAMs, on the other hand, overlap more with Kupffer cells, express GPNMB, SPP1, and MARCO, are morphologically large (L-TAMs), are foamy, and are localized in the invasive margin and tumor core.
