Kinetics of layer growth, visualized directly by optical microscopy. At time t = 0, an alginate gel core of 2 mm diameter, loaded with 15 mg/ml ammonium persulfate (APS) initiator, is placed in a solution of 1 M DMAA monomer (together with cross-linker and accelerant). Still images at various time points are shown in a, b, and c, and these reveal the growth of the polymer layer around the core. Scale bars in the images are 200 µm. In d, a plot of the layer thickness h vs. t is shown, and the solid curve through the data is a fit to Eq. 1
