Reduction of 1 by different routes involving either reduction in the presence of stabilising polyamines to give 2.tmeda or 2.pmdeta, which react with azobenzene or D10-labelled azobenzene to give 3, or a one-pot approach via 2. Thermolysis of 3 extrudes azobenzenes by a concerted process to presumably regenerate 2, but the latter decomposes under thermolytic conditions. Ar = 3,5-Me2C6H3
