The solid curves depict the ratio of the total elastic energy \(E_{{\mathrm{num}}}\) of the numerical simulation and the corresponding energy \(E_{{\mathrm{hom}}}\) of the homogeneously compressed slab at different values of the damping coefficient γ. The inset shows that the resulting nucleation limit tends to the critical threshold of \(\lambda ^{{\rm cr}} = 0.6372\) whilst decreasing the damping factor, in excellent agreement with the prediction of Eq. (13)
