Brain states exhibit hierarchical features across distributed networks. Correlation matrices for state solutions 1 through 8 are shown for each region39. To quantify hierarchical relationships, an exhaustive search was performed to examine the scenario that two states of the (S + 1) state solution were subdivisions of a component of the S-state solution. Hungarian matching was used to determine which two-state combination in S + 1 was best matched to the S-state solution (see Supplementary Figure 4).
