Genotype–phenotype analysis of top-down in vitro SCRaMbLEd strains. The colony pictures were taken after 3 days incubation on SC–Ura medium. Strains derive from the experiment in Fig. 1f. The pathway structures of 17 SCRaMbLEd strains were verified by PCR analysis (Supplementary Fig. 6) and Sanger sequencing of the recovered yeast plasmids. The production of β-carotene was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Supplementary Fig. 7). Error bars represent standard deviation from three replicates
