Each major gap spans present-day and past processes, and results from the lack of information about past and present topography and bathymetry (at the center), which severely limits our understanding of future AIS evolution. The largest unknowns are the processes and interactions at the interfaces between each realm (arrows), which urgently require cross-disciplinary research. The impact of sub-shelf ocean circulation on ice-sheet dynamics across the grounding zone (dashed arrow) is one of the least understood feedbacks and could contribute to processes leading to MISI
