Proposed dissolution mechanism of silica in water considering hydrolysis with hydroxide ions. With each reaction cycle, protonation of the dissolved silicic acid molecule releases two hydroxide ions close to the surface which are mostly consumed by the hydrolysis reaction, giving rise to an auto-catalytic process
