A revised model of lignin-polysaccharide packing and secondary cell wall architecture. Cellulose microfibrils, two-fold and three-fold xylan, and lignin are depicted in red, purple, blue and yellow, respectively. The secondary cell wall adopts much tighter packing than the primary cell walls, and the two hydrophobic cores of lignin and cellulose are bridged by xylans in a conformation-dependent manner. The key findings of this study have been annotated in the model, with the corresponding spots highlighted using dashline circles.
