The charge states of Cu and Ni in different superlattices. a X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of Cu L3-edge for a SrCuO2 (SCO) film and (SCO7/(LaNiO3)1) (noted as S7/L1) and S3/L1 superlattices (SL). A shoulder indicated by the black arrow arises from Cu d9L state. b XAS of Ni L2-edge for a LaNiO3 (LNO) film and S7/L1 and S3/L1 superlattices. A slight shift of the peak position to a lower energy for S7/L1 superlattice suggests an electron doping in the LNO layer. The XAS is obtained by averaging linearly polarized XAS (I = (I(σ) + I(π))/2)
