HMM states 3 and 6 in particular showed peak increases and decreases, respectively, in areas previously identified as fMRI-correlates of sleep spindles. c HMM state 16 is dominating slow wave sleep (N3). Interestingly, there are marked decreases in mean activation in frontal areas and insula, and very localised increases in the supplementary motor area and paracentral lobule.
