The base map is generated from the ArcGIS software. Vegetation coverage was calculated from the annual maximal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index of the SPOT VEGETATION satellite dataset as proposed in ref. 50. The area enclosed in orange line denotes the Chinese Loess Plateau. Modern vegetation coverage on the plateau decreases from southeast to northwest
