Seismic structure beneath the Laxmi basin. Location of IODP drill Site U1457 along the regional seismic profile IODP-04. The uninterpreted (a) and interpreted (b) sections are presented. Site U145726 is strategically located between the Laxmi ridge and Laxmi basin. The igneous basement in Laxmi basin was reached at ~1090 m below seafloor (mbsf). Overlying Cenozoic sedimentary horizons are marked on the interpreted section. TWT (s)—two-way travel time. A 30 m thick early Paleocene26 unit (~63 Ma) overlies the igneous basement. Additional crustal age constraints are gathered from published magnetic anomalies18. Laterally coloured igneous basement section represents crustal segments corresponding to asymmetrically thick crusts on either sides, having different affinity and ages18. Based on seismic reflection characters and available magnetic age constraints, we propose a potential weak zone (FZ), which may have been responsible for inferred transient SI
