Structure-based model. The sequence of states is (1) the termination complex with the stop codon at the A site, (2) the initial binding state (RF compact; “pre-accommodated RF-ribosome complex”), (3) the open catalytic state (RF open/extended; “accommodated RF-ribosome complex”) and (4) the state after peptide release. (The later time point is not known from our experiment, and we only know from another experiment that the final state was seen after 45 s.)
