Sensitivity analysis of the 1-D competitive photosynthesis model. Shown in a is the response of our principle diagnostic parameter, the fraction of overall photosynthesis performed by oxygenic phototrophs (foxy), to varying each metabolic and physical parameter of the model by an order of magnitude above and below the value in the default parameter set (shown by the black horizontal line and denoted by the open circle in Fig. 4). Major metabolic parameters are maximum growth rates (µi) and half-saturation constants for light (Ii) and nutrients (Ki,P) for oxygenic phototrophs and photoferrotrophs (subscripts c and p, respectively). Physical parameters include light attenuation constant (λ), distribution coefficient for scavenging/coprecipitation of phosphorus on iron oxides (Kd), eddy diffusivity (Kv), and upwelling rate (w).
