In all panels, the solid symbols represent the results of simulations which are averaged over 100 realizations for random and scale-free networks, and over 400 realizations for the Hamsterster network. The open symbols represent the results of theoretical solutions obtained from Eqs. (10)–(13). The symbols diamonds, circles, triangles, and stars correspond to αI = 0.5, 1, 2, 4, respectively. The random and scale-free networks have size N = 104 and mean degree 〈k〉 ≈ 10, and the Hamsterster network has N = 2426 and 〈k〉 ≈ 13.7. The insets in panels a, d show the extinction process with αI = 4. Other parameters are βI = 1, αR = 2, and βR = 0.5
