Cross validation workflow. Cross validation on the reference sequences ensured that a classifier was only ever asked to classify unseen sequences. Cross validation on the empirical samples used sequences from the test set of reference sequences to simulate samples with the same taxonomic abundances as the empirical samples, and ensured that bespoke and average weights were never derived from the samples on which they were tested
