a Simultaneous (SIM) lineup, in which six facial photographs are presented at the same time. b Sequential (SEQ) lineup, in which six photographs are presented one at a time. In both SIM and SEQ lineups, subjects are asked to identify the perpetrator or to reject the lineup if no face is recognized from the crime. c Paired comparison (PAR) lineup, in which facial photographs are presented in pairs. Upon viewing each pair, subjects are required to report (in a two-alternative forced choice task) which of the two faces is more similar to memory of the perpetrator. For the present experiment there were 15 possible pairs; each pair was presented three times in random order (a small subset of face pairs is shown in c).
