The dotted black arrow indicates the flow direction (which applies to all cases) while N represents the number of cores encapsulated. a Is obtained for \({\rm{Re}}\simeq 3\) and Ca 0.85, while b for \({\rm{Re}}\simeq 1.2\) and Ca 0.35. All the other cases correspond to \({\rm{Re}}\simeq 3\) and Ca 0.85. As long as Ac < 0.35, the nonequilibrium states are long-lived (l.l.), while if Ac > 0.35 they turn into short-lived (s.l.). Here, crossings of cores from one region towards the other one start to occur. The magenta arrow indicates the direction of a crossing. Multiple crossings are observed as Ac increases. In each snapshot, states are indicated by means of the occupation number classification.
