In the normal state of hepatocytes, intracellular copper levels can be balanced by homeostasis, but induction of SLC46A3 by TCDD can lead to an abnormal increase in copper migration to lysosomes. Conversely, a mild increase of copper in the cytosol may inhibit TG accumulation in liver. Thus, the lack of intracellular copper levels can result in mitochondrial dysfunction.
