Material transport (marked as dashed lines with arrows), with vertical component (Vx) and horizontal component (Vy), causes tectonic uplift and horizontal advection in convergent orogen a (modified after refs. 6, 34) and extensional orogen b. For each system, advection is from the positive side to the negative side. For the positive side, due to advection, the range half-width tends to increase. By contrast, the range half-width of the negative side tends to decrease.
