  1. Rate constants were obtained by analyzing kinetic data of anaerobic inactivation such as those shown in Fig. 4a with the “AAI” model (Supplementary Fig. 14 shows the dependence of kreact on E). The CbA5HWT reference for the kinetic parameters of the variant proteins, measured at pH7 is marked in bold. The % accuracy is our estimate of the maximal error for the determination of each rate constant.
