The p values were obtained from the one-sided test detailed in the Methods. The total set of hypothesis tests included the 87 synonymous codon pairs with the addition of 61 comparisons of the codon with itself for control (denoted as empty circles). To correct for multiple tests, the rejection threshold corresponding to false discovery rate q  = 0.05 was established using the Benjamini-Hochberg procedure (red curve). The set of tests on which the null was rejected is marked in green. For the identities of the rejected pairs, refer to Supplementary Fig. 4.
