Within each panel, gray shading indicates the extent of flow path over which DO concentrations are primarily determined by advection (i.e., where the Damköhler number for DO, DaDO, is less than 1). The dashed lines correspond to the point at which DO consumption overtakes advection as the primary determinant of DO concentration (i.e., where DaDO = 1). The unshaded regions denote where DO consumption determines DO concentrations (i.e., where DaDO > 1). Figure 1 indicates the water levels and hydraulic gradients corresponding to these concentration profiles. Model validation results are shown in Supplementary Figs. 1315.
