  1. Here, we used the binary version of ecoregion and biome distance matrices. P values were calculated using a two-tailed statistical test that combines Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Multiple Regression on distance Matrices (MRM). In this approach, the non-independence of distances from each local network is accounted for in the hypothesis testing by performing 1000 permutations of the response matrix (see “Methods”). EDF represents the effective degrees of freedom for each smooth term in the model. N pairs of networks = 19,110.
