Evolution of friction coefficient, bulk pore pressure rise, temperature and axial displacement with slip displacement from experiments conducted under effective normal stress σn_eff = 3–10 MPa, slip rate Veq = 2.0 m/s, and room humidity (a) or pore water pressure Pp of 25 MPa (b–d). Two kinds of slip surfaces, either flat or pitted (Supplementary Fig. S1d), were used in the experiments. The transient sharp weakening and the spike in bulk pore pressure coexist (yellow shading), although the bulk pressure rise should be much lower than that locally within the fault.
