Arrow dimensions illustrate energy amount and distance traveled within the larval anchovy food chain, and the resulting recruitment. During population boom (blue), energy transfer is high due to a short and efficient food chain, with low transfer through heterotrophic protists supporting higher zooplankton biomass, and greater survival of young (small) larval anchovies leading to greater SSB.
