The optimal growth temperature (OGT) of extant organisms was predicted based on genome sequences using Tome78, with previously demonstrated good correspondence between predicted and empirical values1. Ancestral OGTs were predicted using a ridge regression approach79 across the Thaumarchaeota phylum tree (Dataset 3) using the extant organism OGTs as leaf values. Branches were coloured based on their predicted OGT, and key ancestral OGTs were presented on specific branches. Values presented in parenthesis are included to give overestimated values of OGT (as described in Methods) without altering the conclusion.
