Representative µ-FTIR transmittance spectra of the fossil skin, quartz grains from the sedimentary matrix and the embedding resin; spot locations at which spectra were collected are shown in Supplementary Fig. 12g. The shaded grey regions indicate Si–O–Si bands and the blue region indicates the band for substitute cations for Si in the Si–O–Si structure47.
